Service Therapy Dog Program
A therapy dog accompanies their owner to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, hospice care, therapy practice, and other similar settings. Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs are not entitled to public access. A therapy dog must exhibit appropriate behavior, display confidence, gentle nature, and ease in various settings. Your dog must be able to welcome human contact, petting, cuddling, and awkward handling from eager strangers of all ages.
FORMAT
Individual and group work.
DURATION
Dependent upon the individual dog and training profile.
AGES
Starting a puppy at eight weeks is preferred- adult dogs will be assessed for appropriate behavior, confidence, and ability to tolerate human interaction.
LOCATIONS
In public areas where dogs are allowed and in our training facility in Ft. Lupton. In home training will be done until all shots are completed.
REQUIREMENTS
Full assessment, documentation of veterinary care, and current shots (determined by age).
PUPPY SKILLS
CGC requirements, expand the exposure to human contact and stressful situations, and building the trust and connection in with the human handler.
HUMAN SKILLS
Working as a team, understanding stress signals/warning signs, reading intentions of human interaction, building trust, taking breaks, backing off, and speaking up.
